A presentation by Jaroslav Romanchuk, a leading market-oriented Belarusian economist. The presentation is organized by the Baltic Black Sea Initiative (BBSI) in collaboration with the Center for International  Private Enterprise (CIPE).

Mr. Romanchuk is the Founder and President of the Minsk-based Research Mises Center, Vice President of the United Civic Party, and the Executive Director of the independent think tank Analytical Center “Strategy.”

He has authored over 1,000 articles and co-authored numerous books on market-based economics and democratic governance, including a handbook that offers an alternative path of Belarusian development with free-market solutions in monetary, taxation, budgetary, social security and privatization issues.

He has received a number of internationally recognized awards with the most recent in April 2009 the Sir Anthony Fisher International Memorial Award in the category of Young Institutes for his authorship of the book “In Search of Economic Miracle: Lessons for Belarus.”

For two years he served as the Senior Economist of the Parliamentary Commission for Economic Reforms in the last democratically-elected parliament in Belarus (1995-96).  He served four years as a director of a private foreign company in Belarus. Since 1999, he has been hosting economic salons for students and young activists in his apartment in Minsk .It turned into a forum for young scientists and socially active people to debate ideas of economic and political freedom, both economic theory and economic policies.

To assist the small and medium-sized business community in Belarus in improving the business environment, he currently chairs the working group that drafted the National Platform of Business in Belarus, approved by a coalition of 23 business associations and 30,000 small- and medium-sized business owners. This project is conducted in partnership with the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), which is an affiliate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
