Kovaluk Scholarship Fund

Girls from Zabolotivci present bread to Mrs. Tymiak and Mrs. Tymiak-Lonchyna at the first Kovaluk awards ceremony

"The work we are doing together with the Foundation is only the base for a broader plan - namely promulgating the idea of helping village children. I believe that with time, this idea will establish roots in diaspora communities and in Ukraine itself, where there are still many generous families."
- Bohdan Kovaluk

The Kovaluk Scholarship Fund was established in December 2000 by the family of Melania Denys Kovaluk to encourage students from the village of Zabolotivci (Lviv oblast) to continue their education on a university level.

Twelve students from Zabolotivtsi received scholarships in August 2003, the second year of the scholarship fund. This year's recipients were as follows: Yaroslav Baran, Iryna Denys, Nataliya Shynkar, Svitlana Opoka, Oleh Shalvir, Olha Vintoniv, Nataliya Vayda, Andriy Petrylakiv, Maria Stryyska, Nelya Shynkar, Ulyana Denys, Liliya Kukhtyn, and Petro Shchepanyuk. Each of the students who received the cash award is enrolled in an institute of higher education in Ukraine.

Maria Tymiak, sister of Mr. Kovaluk, has sponsored another project in Zabolotivtsi - a computer room for the Zabolotiv Primary School. The school has received three computers to date, and three more have been ordered for the children.

The Kovaluk Scholarship Fund is jointly administered by USUF and the Canada Ukraine Foundation (CUF) of Winnepeg.

In Loving Memory of Wolodymyr V. Logush

The Kovaluk Scholarship Fund grew by over $14,000 due to gifts made in the memory of Wolodymyr Vasyl Logush of Camillus, NY, who passed away at the age of 77. In lieu of flowers, family members and friends were requested to make donations to the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation’s Kovaluk Scholarship Fund.

Wolodymyr V. Logush was born in Buchach, Ukraine and lived in Camillus, NY near Syracuse since 1957. He retired in 1989 after 30 years as co-owner and owner of Logusz Brothers Building & Construction Company.

Mr. Logush attended St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Alexandra (Kovaluk) Logush, of 50 years; son, Dr. Adrian Logush of Kerhonkson, NY; and two sisters, Oksana Fedorowycz of Troy, MI and Daria Kurylko of Summit, NJ.

The Foundation extends its sympathies to Mr. Logush’s wife Alexandra, son Adrian and sisters Oksana and Daria. May he rest in peace. Vichnaya pamyat!
